  1. I remember seeing Kurt Vonnegut’s explanation before: both thought-provoking and highly amusing.

    My suspicion (which is apparently spelled correctly, but I keep thinking I’ve mistyped “scorpion”) is that this is the macro-level of the small scene-by-scene ups and downs that happen in a story, because ultimately (being very reductionist 😉 ) all stories are about change.
